particular concerns: “Girls”

i am having a lot of mixed feelings about this new HBO show. i hated “Tiny Furniture.” it was a poorly written, worse acted and generally self-indulgent time suck. i spent the majority of the movie shouting “do some volunteer work!” at the screen.

i also hate that this show exclusively stars the daughters of very successful people. not that children of people who are successful shouldn’t also be successful. but come on, there’s no denying the power of nepotism. Lena Dunham is not that talented. yes, i admire that she made a movie and that she’s a female filmmaker in an industry we’re forever being told is devoid of them. fine, she’s a a person with a vagina making movies (her, not the vagina - though i’m sure that’s not far off). but none of this should mask that she’s still not very good.

mostly, i hate that i will probably watch this and relate to it. and not because it’s relatable, but because it’s been designed that way. which is worst of all. all things that seek out to “capture the millenial twentysomething milieu” by setting up shop in brooklyn and making pithy pop culture references make me want to type out BARF in all caps all over my screen.

thoughts?

Good God, Lemon. This is an affront to television.

I was overwhelmingly underwhelmed when I say the previews for this on HBO, because it looked tired as hell, and also all 4(?) women featured were pretty much indistinguishable. But I’m sure HBO and Big TV and whoever else will be patting themselves on the back about it.

Co-signed. Plus I don’t trust (exec producer) Judd Apatow’s ability to address women GIRLS (my mistake) as far as I can throw him. Stick to dude bro comedy, Judd.

I don’t think it looks THAT bad. Like, definitely not an affront to television especially in comparison to all the other shit we have. I mean, it’s obvz. a show that’s pretty much marketed to all of my shitty interests and it’s all mumblecore twentysomething nyc etc. but I’m trying to be cautiously optimistic? Maybe it’s a bad preview for an alright show? I haven’t seen Tiny Furniture, though. And I don’t think Apatow has a HUGE role in this aside from yo, here’s some cash and my name and a joke about dicks. And even if I’m wrong about that then whatever, dude has been really good to me in the television world. Basically I’m saying that I’m the target demographic so I want to not hate this.

An affront to television? Really? Have we gotten tired of saying bad things about Whitney and New Girl or something? I really don’t think this looks that bad, and frankly having Apatow’s name attached to it is exciting because some the best stuff he’s done has been in television.

I mean, I’m tired of the indie/mumblecore cliches as much as anybody else, and I haven’t seen Tiny Furniture yet either so I have no opinion about Lena Dunham herself, but comments like the ones above are a startling reminder of how critical women are of each other, and it’s really disappointing in this context because we always say we want women to be doing more in film and television but when they do, we can’t stand it. We have to tear it down. And that’s just not fucking productive at all. Even if this is pretty horrible, at least it’s something? And at least we have someone other than Chelsea Handler with her foot in the door?

Also, man. People hate everything. That sucks.
